TUNED MASS

Xale

It’s what we value most: reality, culled straight from the heart of darkness, each of its elements amplified to around 5.5 times on the Richter Scale—not quite destroying things around you—but leaving that deep-cell memory imprint on your brain. This is what Mark Ernestus does.

Those words sound more contrived than they did inside our heads, and they don’t do this 12″ justice—its triple-entwined drums jumping at your neck from the speaker, Mbene Diatta’s voice straight from the otherworlds—but maybe this does:

“Xale” is the saddest jam of the year.
